DID YOU KNOW
In California, teenagers can get a driver's license by following these steps:
- Get a permit
You can get a permit if you're over 15 but under 18 without driver education or training certificates. However, you can't take the driving test until you turn 18.
- Practice driving
You should practice driving for at least six months, including 10 hours at night. An adult who is at least 25 years old and has a valid driver's license must supervise and certify your practice.
- Complete driver training
You need to complete six hours of driver training with a licensed instructor. You can take these courses at your high school or at a state-licensed driving school.
- Apply for a provisional license
You can apply for a provisional license once you've met the above requirements. You'll need to provide the following documents:
Proof of identity
Two proofs of residency
Legal full name document
Social security number
Instruction permit from California or another state for at least six months
Proof that you completed driver education and driver training
- Pass the driving test
You can schedule your driving test appointment six months after receiving your permit if you're under 18, or immediately after passing your written exam if you're over 18. After passing the test, you'll receive an interim license that's valid for 90 days, and your provisional license will be mailed to you.
- Get your full license
Your provisional license will become a full license when you turn 18
