Steps to Obtain a California Instruction Permit (Under Age 18):

  1. Age Requirement: Be at least 15 ½ but under 18.
  2. Driver Education: Complete or enroll in a certified Driver Education program.
  3. Application Process: Submit a California Driver’s License or ID Card Application.
  4. Parental Consent: Have your parent(s) or guardian(s) sign the application.

DMV Appointment Requirements:

When visiting the DMV, remember to:

  • Bring proof of identity and residency (California Identification Card or equivalent).
  • Pay the application fee.
  • Pass a vision exam.
  • Take a photo.
  • Complete the knowledge test, which includes multiple-choice questions from the California Driver’s Handbook. A passing score is 80%.
